Fancy yourself as a bit of a designer? Fancy winning yourself an iPod Touch? Fancy your designs being splashed out all over the university? Fancy doing your bit for the Environment? Fancy this!

The University has recently been named a Carbon Champion and as part of the ongoing initiative to make Sunderland the UK’s greenest university we are launching a competition for staff and students to design a logo for a two year University-wide campaign. We want your original design ideas – and in return the winning entry will win an 8GB iPod Touch 3G worth £200.
To enter we need you to create a logo – something eye catching and identifiable we can use for everything from t-shirts to web icons, and even thermometers – and also four individual posters – details below.

Posters across the University in strategic places will help to raise awareness. The posters will be used as screen savers and will be inserted into magazines or newsletters. Four posters was felt a suitable number to deliver the various energy awareness messages.

Poster 1: Switch Me Off
Message: To encourage the target audience to be more aware of wasting energy by leaving electrical equipment switched on or left on standby. Examples include lights being left on, computer monitors, mobile phone/laptop chargers being left switched on but not connected or being left in the phone or laptop when the battery is charged, all electrical appliances that are not in use. Switch them off even if they are on standby they can be using 80% of the energy required when they are switched on.

Poster 2: Turn Me Off/Down
Message : Unnecessary use of heating when it is not needed. This can be combated by using heating thermostats and turning the heating down, using timers on central heating systems, closing windows when the heating is on or put a jumper on if cold (ie dressing appropriately for the weather)

Poster 3: Save Me
Message : Water consumption is often a vital resource that is forgotten but needs preserving. It is important not to waste water. Examples of saving water include turning off taps when not in use, have a shower instead of a bath, and fill a sink for dishes instead of washing an item under a running tap.

Poster 4: Ready, Steady Go!
Message: The University is launching a traffic light scheme across campus whereby all switches and plugs will be labelled with a coloured sticker.
Green- Switch me off when not in use e.g. Computer monitors
Amber- Ask before you switch me off e.g. Drink dispensers
Red- Never switch me off e.g. Freezers

These posters are expected to incorporate your logo design, and must be copyright free to ensure that the material can be reproduced and altered as part of the 2009-2011 Energy Awareness Campaign.

Return your entries to Claire Charles, claire.charles@sunderland.ac.uk by Friday, April 2, 2010. Entries must be in an electronic form, and of a suitably high resolution.
